Ozempic? Wagovy? Mounjaro?

By now, most of you have heard the buzz about the popular GLP weight loss drugs that are on the market. Many people lose weight quickly on these medications, without having to adjust their diets or lifestyles. Our patients come in with questions about these meds and whether there may be other natural solutions for targeting their metabolic health. We thought it would be helpful to sort through some of the risks and benefits of these meds, as well as shed some light on how we approach metabolic health from a more holistic approach. As we say on repeat, each patient needs to make empowered decisions for their health. We hope this helps!

Potential benefits of GLP Medications

  • Effective Blood Sugar Control - GLP agonists work by mimicking the action of the hormone GLP-1, which stimulates insulin secretion and suppresses glucagon release, resulting in improved blood sugar levels.

  • Weight Loss - GLP medications often lead to effortless weight loss or weight stabilization, by curbing appetite and slowing digestion, resulting in feeling full faster.

  • Cardiovascular Benefits - These meds may reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes, cholesterol, and other cardiovascular events in individuals with diabetes who are at high risk of these complications. It is not yet clear whether these benefits are from the drug or from the weight loss.

  • Convenient Administration - GLP medications are available in various forms, including injections, sublingual and oral formulations, allowing for flexibility in treatment options based on individual preferences and needs.

Potential downsides of GLP Medications

  • Side Effects - Like any medication, GLP agonists can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort, particularly when starting treatment or increasing the dosage.

  • Cost - GLP medications can be expensive. This cost factor may limit access for some individuals or pose a financial burden.

  • Injection Site Reactions - Injectable GLP agonists may cause irritation or reactions at the injection site, leading to discomfort or inconvenience for some users.

  • Long-Term Safety - While short-term studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of GLP medications, their long-term effects are still being studied. There are concerns necessitating ongoing monitoring and research regarding potential risks, such as pancreatitis, and it is not recommended for patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer.

As holistic practitioners, we love to see our patients approach their metabolic health holistically. Here are a few ways we work with patients to create lasting, natural changes:

  • Dietary Modifications - Adopting a diet rich in whole foods, vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help manage blood sugar levels naturally. Emphasizing foods with a low glycemic index and reducing the intake of processed sugars and refined carbohydrates can be particularly beneficial.

  • Regular Exercise - Engaging in regular physical activity such as strength training and walking can really help improve insulin sensitivity and help control blood sugar levels. Even a quick ten minute walk after meals has been shown to positively impact our blood sugars.

  • Stress Reduction Techniques - Chronic stress can negatively impact blood sugar levels. Practicing stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises may help improve overall well-being and support better glucose control. Acupuncture has been proven to have direct improvement in your stress hormones.

  • Herbs and Supplements - Certain herbs and supplements have been shown to help with metabolic health and blood sugar regulation. Examples include berberine, targeted probiotics, cinnamon, and alpha lipoic acid.  It's essential to consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before incorporating these supplements into your regimen. We are here to help, Dr. Sara and Monique, NP, have created a Metabolic Protocol specifically developed to target blood sugar regulation, reduce inflammation and boost metabolism.
